Climate in Barbados

While most of us wouldn’t think twice about going for a night swim when the water’s temperatures hover around 78oF, most Barbadians will think we’ve going crazy, complaining that the sea is way too cold to warrant a dip. This is by no means surprising. After all Barbados is indeed situated in the tropics where the weather is cool, the sun shines high in the sky for the best part of the year keeping day time temperatures, the winds are cool not cold and the nights cozy and pleasant.

Summer time is also rain time in Barbados, the calming effects of the raindrops both refreshing and much needed. However, these sudden bursts of rain do not last long as the sky soon becomes sunny and everything has gone back to its original dry state within a mere few minutes.

Running from June through to October, the hurricane season generally bypasses Barbados: arising off the African Coast hurricanes head to the Caribbean, swinging North about 100 miles from Barbados. Instead of hurricanes, during the same season Barbados experiences tropical rainstorms, which spectacular as they might be they are also easily absorbed either by the underground lakes or the sea and even the heaviest rains quickly evaporate.
